Osasuna came into this match desperately needing points and goals, both of which have been very few and far between in the first two weeks of the season, while Villarreal are looking to achieve their best start in their club’s history with three straight wins.
In the beginning neither side looked to a have definitive edge, despite Villarreal having the majority of possession, it was Osasuna who created the most chances in the first fifteen minutes of play.
That was short-lived as Villarreal quickly took control of the match, creating chance and flustering the Osasuna defense.
Their first strike came on a defensive error, as Javier Aquino fired in a cross, that found newcomer Jeremy Perbet, who bobbled the pass, weaved around Roberto, then fired it between the keeper’s legs to put his side up 1-0.
However, things would get worse before they got better for Osasuna, who were powerless to stop a brilliant chip in by Javier Aquino off a deflected cross, to put Villarreal up 0-2 in the 30th minute.
In the second half, Osasuna were absolutely lifeless and Villarreal ran rampant on the attack, continually pressing the Pamplona side, despite several substitutions.
Things came to a head when Villarreal manager, Marcelino brought in Mexican winger, Giovani Dos Santos, who was rested for the first half by design and would have come on in the final thirty minutes anyway, but seemed as if Marcelino was also trying to send a message.
The message was heard loud and clear by Osasuna and La Liga as Javier Aquino found a streaking Giovani Dos Santos, who performed a running backheel that found Uche in the middle of the penalty box for the third goal of the evening.
The match was effectively over after that display, and while Osasuna got off one or two more shots, it was clear they were out matched and drained emotionally as well as physically.
Villarreal, on the other hand, have the look of an early favourite to make the Champions League in their first year back and won this match without their best player, Dos Santos, on the pitch.
